Agree its difficult ot do settings on these kind of shots.

Thanks, everyone. Remus, I haven't checked, I will try to do that later. It was spontaneous in whatever mode I already had, I had a mere second or so before they were gone.

This is a good try on a very difficult capture Mans. I think that a faster shutter speed would have helped and also, a more frontal perspective. It also looks as if your camera auto-exposed for the water ... making these loons very dark. The strong point here is the water movement when there should be more attention to the birds. I have taken many of these in flight shots with similar results. There certainly is an element of luck involved. As you have said, you did not have time to set your camera for this. One ofthese days, you'll capture such a shot just right. Good bird exposure, good shutter speed, and the right angle. Persistence will pay off!
